Operation Smile: Changing Lives, One Smile at a Time

There are moments in photography when you realise that what you are witnessing goes far beyond the images you are capturing. My experience with Operation Smile in the Democratic Republic of the Congo was one of those moments.

It is impossible not to be amazed by the dedication of the surgeons, nurses, anaesthetists and medical volunteers who come together to offer children something that can profoundly change their lives: access to safe, life-changing surgery.

Every three minutes, somewhere in the world, a child is born with a cleft lip or cleft palate. These conditions can affect a child's ability to feed, speak and develop, and in some communities, children and their families also face stigma, discrimination and social isolation.

For families without access to specialised medical care, a condition that can be treated surgically may become a lifelong struggle.

Operation Smile works to change that reality by providing free cleft surgery and comprehensive care to children and adults who would otherwise struggle to access treatment.

In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where access to specialised healthcare remains particularly challenging, the organisation has been working since 2009. To date, it reports having provided surgical care to more than 2,500 patients.

What makes this work so extraordinary is not only the medical expertise involved, but also the human stories unfolding around every operation.

As a photographer, I was deeply moved by the encounters between medical teams, children and their families. The anticipation before surgery, the anxiety, the hope, and then those intensely emotional moments when parents see their child after the operation.

It is difficult to hold back tears when you witness the relief and emotion of families who know that their child's future may now be very different.

A surgical procedure can make an extraordinary difference, but the journey does not necessarily end in the operating theatre. Some children need additional surgery, nutritional support, speech therapy, dental treatment or other specialised care as they grow.

Beyond individual operations, Operation Smile also works to strengthen local healthcare systems, train medical professionals and make specialised treatment more accessible to communities.

For me, photographing this work was an opportunity to document something deeply meaningful: the extraordinary difference that medical expertise, generosity and human commitment can make in someone's life.

Behind every operation is a child with a story, a family with hopes and fears, and a dedicated team working to give them new possibilities.

Some photographs capture a moment. Others remind us just how much a single moment can change a life.
